President Donald Trump has accused Harvard University of misusing U.S. taxpayer dollars by subsidizing foreign students while resisting federal investigations into antisemitism and foreign influence on campus.
In a fiery post on his Truth Social platform on Sunday, May 25, Trump claimed that nearly 31 percent of Harvard’s student body comes from foreign countries, many of which he suggested are “not at all friendly to the United States,” yet contribute nothing toward their students’ education.
“Why isn’t Harvard saying that almost 31 percent of their students are from FOREIGN LANDS and yet those countries, some not at all friendly to the United States, pay NOTHING toward their students’ education, nor do they ever intend to. Nobody told us that!” (Related: DHS cuts $2.7M in Harvard funding over antisemitism failures, left-wing indoctrination.)
“We want to know who those foreign students are, a reasonable request since we give Harvard BILLIONS OF DOLLARS, but Harvard isn’t exactly forthcoming. We want those names and countries. Harvard has $52,000,000, use it and stop asking for the Federal Government to continue GRANTING money to you!” Trump posted.
The accusation came a few days after Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem stripped Harvard of its participation in the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), which allows institutions to host foreign students on F- and J-visas.
“This administration is holding Harvard accountable for fostering violence, antisemitism and coordinating with the Chinese Communist Party on its campus,” Noem posted on her official account on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Harvard had plenty of opportunity to do the right thing. It refused.”
In a letter sent to Harvard on Thursday, May 22, the DHS claimed that Harvard had not met the required reporting standards. To restore its SEVP certification, the university must provide requested student records within 72 hours. The DHS is demanding all Harvard records from the past five years related to illegal, dangerous or violent acts, on or off campus, by enrolled non-immigrant students; any violations of rights or threats made by these students against others, including university staff; and disciplinary records and all audio/video footage of protests involving these students. But then, Harvard failed to do so.
Moreover, the DHS accused Harvard’s leadership of fostering an unsafe environment by allowing “anti-American, pro-terrorist agitators” to harass and physically assault individuals – particularly Jewish students – while disrupting the university’s academic integrity. The agency further claimed that many involved are foreign students.
With more than 6,700 international students, the revocation threatens to disrupt academic careers and research collaborations. Noem warned that affected students must transfer to maintain their visa status, though Harvard vowed to fight the decision.
“This should be a warning to every other university to get your act together,” Noem said in an interview with Fox News’ Gillian Turner. “Get your act together because we are coming to make sure that these programs, that you are facilitating an environment where students can learn, where they are safe and that they are not discriminated against based on their race or religion.”
